In the 2014 edition of the tournament, the men in Purple and Gold had a lukewarm start to their campaign, winning just two games out of their first seven league matches.

However, what transpired later was nothing short of magical as the Gautam Gambhir led side went on to register six consecutive wins before their final league match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

A collective performance with the bat enabled the visiting side to score 160 runs for the loss of seven wickets after Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to field.

The home team needed 161 runs for the win, and if they managed to chase down this target in 15.2 overs, it would guarantee them the second position in the playoffs.

The opening partnership of Robin Uthappa and skipper Gambhir made optimum use of the field restrictions. However, a couple of quick wickets in the middle overs meant Yusuf Pathan walked out at number four.

With 106 runs needed in 47 deliveries to seal the second spot, Pathan made his intentions clear from the word go, smashing the bowlers all around the park.

The right-handed batsman was lethal in the 13th over the innings as he smashed Dale Steyn for 26 runs (4,6,6,4,4,2) to turn the tide in favour of the Knights.

The first of his two sixes in this over helped the hard-hitting batsman record the then fastest half-century in the IPL, off just 15 balls, to help his team inch closer to victory.

One of the mainstays in the middle order for the Knights, Pathan was adjudged the player of the match as he smashed 72 runs off 22 balls with five boundaries and seven maximums, helping the home team register a four-wicket win in 14.2 overs.

Pathan's brutal innings powered the Knight Riders to the second spot based on Net Run Rate and ensured them two chances of making it to the summit clash.
