18th April 2008, a day that started the revolution of franchise cricket all across the globe as the Indian Premier League commenced with the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore featuring in the inaugural match.

While the hype was around the build-up to the league and the future of cricket, it did not take too long for Brendon McCullum to take over with one of the defining innings of his life and kick start the cricketing feast.

On this very day in 2008, the swashbuckling opener and current coach dismantled the opposition bowling attack by scoring an unbeaten 158 runs off 73 balls to script his way into the record books.

A cricket frenzy lashed the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as the viewers witnessed a masterclass from McCullum.

Opening the batting along with Saurav Ganguly, the Kiwi batsman started the innings steadily in the first over.

However, what followed later was a spectacular display of batsmanship to set the foundation for a mammoth first innings total of 222 runs. The knock was studded with 10 boundaries, and 13 maximum hits over the fence.

The night marked a glorious chapter in the history of the sport, and it was the innings of McCullum that defined the beginnings of his long-term association with the Purple and Gold.
