KKR 220/4 [Ajinkya Rahane 67(40), Angkrish Raghuvanshi 51(29); Shardul Thakur 3/39 in 4 Overs] lost to MI 224/4 in 19.1 Overs [Ryan Rickelton 81(43), Rohit Sharma 78(38); Kartik Tyagi 1/43 in 4 Overs] by 6 wickets

In a starry night at the Wankhede Stadium, the Kolkata Knight Riders stepped into their first game of the season with a spring in their step and a rejuvenated squad as compared to the previous year. A starting XI built around a few new faces along with the familiar ones aimed to start off this TATA IPL journey with a win. Historically, Mumbai hadn’t been the best away venue for KKR but they had found some success recently and looked to add win quota to that as they went into this important game.

KKR made a strong statement with the bat after being put into bat first by posting an imposing 220/4 on the board. The innings was set up beautifully at the top, with Ajinkya Rahane leading from the front with a composed yet aggressive 67 off 40 deliveries, complemented by a blistering start alongside Finn Allen that put immediate pressure on the opposition. The early momentum allowed KKR to dictate terms through the powerplay, laying the perfect foundation. In the middle overs, Angkrish Raghuvanshi carried that impetus forward with a fluent 51 off 29 balls, ensuring the scoring rate never dipped. The innings reflected intent, depth, and control, as KKR capitalised on key phases to build a commanding total.

In response, KKR showed resilience and character with the ball, continuing to push Mumbai Indians deep into the chase. With a lot of dew around and the pitch getting better to bat, it wasn’t easy for the KKR bowlers to keep things under control. Despite a couple of strong partnerships from the opposition, the Knight Riders kept chipping away and never allowed the game to drift completely out of reach. The bowlers stayed disciplined under pressure, consistently challenging the batters and stretching the contest till the final stages. It was a spirited effort in the field, with KKR fighting till the very end and making the opposition work hard for every run in a high-scoring encounter. Despite their best efforts, MI managed to get over the line in the last over. KKR will be proud of their performance and there will be plenty of positives that the coaching staff and leadership group will be looking for from that performance as they move forward into their next game with an aim to bounce back strongly.
