A cloudy morning at the Bristol Country Ground greeted the two sides as England resumed on their overnight score of 269 runs for the loss of six wickets. 

An array of strokes in the first session of the play resulted in Sophia Dunkley notching up her maiden half-century (74) in her debut game for the England side.

With useful contribution down the order, the home team declare at 396/ 9 in their first innings. 

However, what followed later was a sublime performance by the opening combination of the Indian team led by 17-year-old debutant Shafali Verma. 

The right-handed batter smashed 96 off 152 balls with 13 boundaries and two sixes to help the visiting side lay a solid foundation with a 167 run stand. 

Despite falling agonisingly short of the well-deserved hundred, she recorded the highest ever score for Indian women on debut. 

Smriti Mandhana, on the other hand, played a perfect role in the partnership of guiding the teenager in her maiden test appearance. The southpaw scored a sublime half-century (78) to put the visiting side in a strong position.

However, the Indian team lost a flurry of wickets in the final session of the day. The visiting side lost five wickets for 16 runs in the last hour ending the day on 187 for five.
