KKR vs SRH: Shubman Gill's sublime half-century powers KKR to six-wicket win
A scintillating half-century from Shubman Gill helped the Kolkata Knight Riders register a six-wicket win against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Dubai International Stadium. In a low scoring encounter, the 22-year old anchored the innings with a sublime knock of 57 to propel the Knight Riders to a hard-fought win.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Sunrisers were jolted early in the innings as they lost Wriddhiman Saha for a golden duck on the second ball of the innings by an inswinger from Tim Southee.
While Jason Roy and Kane Williamson tried to steady the innings, the opener was dismissed for 10, trying to attack Shivam Mavi in the fourth over. With the team reeling at 16 for the loss of two wickets, the onus of side in the batting department relied heavily on Williamson. However, the skipper was run out in the first over after the powerplay courtesy of a direct hit from Shakib Al Hasan.
The Sunrisers were stifled by the spin trio of Shakib, Varun Chakaravarhy and Sunil Narine in the middle overs. With runs hard to come by, they lost a flurry of wickets and managed to post 115/8 in the first innings.
With two wickets each from Southee, Mavi and Chakravarthy and an economical spell from Sunil Narine set the game up for the Knight Riders in this high-voltage clash. The mystery spinner conceded 12 runs in his quota of four overs with 12 dot deliveries to restrict the opposition for a modest total of 115/8 in the first innings.
Despite losing Venkatesh Iyer early in pursuit of 116, Gill laid a solid foundation for the side with a well-compiled knock of 57 runs studded with ten boundaries.
With the team struggling at 38 for the loss of two wickets, Gill and Nitish Rana forged a crucial 55-run partnership for the third wicket. However, with 23 runs required, the right-handed batter was caught on the boundary trying to attack Siddarth Kaul.
Coming in at number five, Dinesh Karthik scored a quick-fire 18 off 12 deliveries to help the side get over the line in this high-voltage clash.
The Knight Riders will take on the Rajasthan Royals on Thursday, 7th October, in an evening encounter at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
