CSK vs KKR: Jadeja’s cameo powers Chennai to 2-wicket win in thrilling encounter

Ravindra Jadeja's cameo of 22 runs off eight deliveries in the back end of the innings powered the Chennai Super Kings to a two-wicket win against the Kolkata Knight Riders in an afternoon encounter at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

With 26 runs needed of a dozen balls, the southpaw amassed 21 runs in the penultimate over to help the Super Kings inch closer to the win. Despite Jadeja's heroics, the Knight Riders pulled things back incredibly courtesy of Sunil Narine's magical last over. With four runs needed, Narine started the over with a wicket of Sam Curran to dent the opposition batting unit.

Despite going for three runs off the third delivery, he bowled four dot balls, including the wickets of Curran and Jadeja, to get the equation down to a run off the last ball. However, Deepak Chahar managed to hit the ball towards mid-wicket and help the Super Kings register a win in a nail-biting encounter.

Earlier in the day, on a hot and sunny afternoon, skipper Eoin Morgan won the toss and elected to bat first. While the Knights were dented in the first over with the wicket of Shubman Gill for 9, Venkatesh Iyer and Rahul Tripathi steadied the innings with a second-wicket partnership of 40 runs. However, on the first ball of the sixth over, the southpaw tried to take the attack to Shardul Thakur to managed to get a faint edge with MS Dhoni completing a regulation catch.

Despite the wicket being on the slower side, the middle order of the Knight Riders, led by Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana, kept the scoreboard ticking. Continuing his fine form in this edition of the IPL, the right-hander scored a sublime 45 off 33 before being undone by Jadeja's fuller delivery.

With a valuable contribution from Nitish Rana (37*) and a 26-run cameo from Dinesh Karthik down the order, Knight Riders scored 171 for the loss of six wickets in the first innings.

Chasing 172 runs, the opening combination of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis started the innings in a commanding fashion as they stitched a 74-run partnership for the opening wicket in 8.2 overs to lay a solid foundation.

However, the Chennai outfit lost three wickets in six deliveries, including a massive wicket of Dhoni courtesy of a Varun Chakaravarthy special.

Despite the stutter, CSK managed to record a close win and go on top in the points table. The Knight Riders will lock horns with Delhi Capitals on Tuesday, 28th September at the Sharjah Cricket Ground.
